Tinos is the third biggest in size island of Cyclades, after Naxos island and Andros island. It is located southeast of Andros and their between distance is only 1,5 km. Near Tinos is Syros island (capital of Cyclades), Dilos and Myconos. Its size is 195 m2 and it has 9700 civils. Capital of Tinos island is Tinos port (Chora). The ground of the island consists mostly of mountains, rocks and stones. The highest mountain is Tsiknias with height up to 713m. From the ancient years Tinos considered to be the island of the God of Winds Aeolos and that because very strong winds exist all around the island. The main products of Tinos are oil, wine, fruits, vegetables, etc. Tinos is also famous for its marbles and mostly for the colored marbles. The first citizen of Tinos was named Tinos, that is how the island got its name. In the ancient years it was called Ofiousa (from the Hellenic word 'snake') because it had lot of snakes. On 15 of August, Italians hit the Hellenic war ship Elli, just before the Greek-Italian war. Every 15 of August in the island takes place a celebration for the famous church of Panagia. |
